KINGSPORT — Explosives maker BAE Systems Ordnance Systems Inc. has applied for approval to build and operate “new emissions sources” at the Holston Army Ammunition Plant.

The application is with the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation (TDEC).

The modification consists of new natural gas and oil-fired boilers, emergency engines, and process emission sources used in the manufacture of explosives, according to a public notice.

BAE is the operating contractor for HAAP, which has been undergoing a huge modernization to make next generation explosives.

TDEC’s Division of Air Pollution Control held a public hearing concerning the application in Kingsport on Thursday.

Electronic copies of the draft permit and supporting materials are available by accessing the TDEC site located at: https://www.tn.gov/environment/ppo-public-participation/ppo-public-participation/ppo-air.html.

Written comments may also be submitted electronically to air.pollution.control@tn.gov. A final determination will be made after consideration of all relevant comments and other available information. Questions may be addressed to Travis Blake at (615) 532-0554 or (615) 532-0617.
